Coming to Monuments uses social dance, theater, and storytelling to unpack the history behind the display of Confederate monuments and the conflicted legacy their presence bestows. Focusing on the period between the end of the Civil War and the Civil Rights movement, selected monuments from Charleston act as windows into a time in which Confederate memorials and Jim Crow laws were intimately connected. Fundamental to the work is the use of primary sources, such as letters, poems, audio recordings, ordinances, etc., which provide the inspiration for the structure, the movement, and score of spoken text and music by Charleston poet laureate, Marcus Amaker.
